Captain's Log Day 1
After a long month working on Rubber Ducky Boat Battle for the Boss Rush Jam 2025, my team and I are throwing ourselves into another challenge. After feeling the pressure of making a game in a month, we're getting more ambitious with only a week to make a game for Brackey's Game Jam 2025.1!
After spending some time wracking our minds with the eight potential themes, we were pleased to hear that "Nothing can go wrong..." was selected. As a pair of developers that are avid sci-fi fans and a third artist that is an avid sci-fi tolerater, we were excited to jump into our own space adventure.
We initially were thinking of doing a heist game, where the player dictates team movements based off of a field state presented to them. After the players were placed, the actions would be carried out and either the heist would be successful, or the state would reset for the player to set their pieces in place again with more knowledge than they had. We decided very quickly that the number of puzzles to design would bloat the scope beyond a week. Next, we thought about "Super Safe Science." The title is a banger if I don't say so myself, but a fun alliterative title wouldn't carry a concept that we couldn't flesh out to be engaging and interesting. We also thought about going
meta and building a game jam game about being QA testers for games in a game jam. That sounded like a fun concept, but we struggled to make it visually engaging.
Finally, we opted for something that we were actually considering initially for the "Mechanical Mayhem" theme. We're going to make a game about a slacker in space that acts as a courier. He has to get various cargo that nobody else wants to touch from Point A to Point B. He has "The World's Okayest Ship," which is meant to be operated by three people. He is only one people. Our gameplay will focus on managing course corrections, weapons systems, plotting navigation, fuel economy, reactor heat, and more...by yourself.
We plan to blend tension, action and thoughtful puzzles through use of first person movement and point and click object interaction to make the game frantic, but fun. Currently, we only have our environment mapped out which includes four "stations." The stations are the "Helm", "Weapons/Shields", "Cargo", and "Navigation/Comms." The "Reactor Core" is central and will have a one-time use, so we haven't necessarily been considering it a station per se. Currently the only "gameplay" is being able to tour the ship and try out player movements which include sprint (shift), crouch (ctrl), jump (space) and WASD movement. Esc will lock your camera and free your cursor, while RMB will return camera control to you.
We appreciate you giving our game your time and attention, and we look forward to your feedback.
Sincerely,
The Crew
